Nintendo picks up major legal victory against sale of Switch piracy devices

Nintendo has announced its latest win for a legal battle involving the sale of Switch piracy devices.

The company has been against websites that sell these devices to European customers, and decided to raise the issue with The District Court of The Hague. Following a new ruling, it’s now unlawful to sell the MIG Switch and similar products in Europe. Websites have been forced to stop selling the devices moving forward.

MIG Switch is able to get around Nintendo’s anti-piracy measures and play unauthorized copies of games. 

Nintendo issued a statement about its win, saying that legal action was pursued to protect its own intellectual property and protect “the many video game developers globally that depend on legitimate sales of Nintendo video games.”

The statement reads:

“Nintendo promotes and fosters game development and creativity and strongly supports the game developers who legitimately create new and innovative games. Nintendo’s message to players is to avoid purchasing or using circumvention devices, circumvention software or unauthorized copies of video games, as this increases the risk of interfering with the functionality and experience provided by authentic Nintendo game consoles, video games and systems.”

Nintendo has always taken a strong anti-piracy stance. If it has reason to believe a user is involved with piracy, the company is not afraid to dish out punishment. Nintendo issued an accidental online ban wave recently, but it has since been reversed.
